MEET OLYMPUS PHOTOGRAPHER ALEXA RAKOW

WHO ARE YOU?

I’m from Southern California. The mountains and beaches of my hometown, Santa Barbara, have always had a huge impact on my love for exploring nature. While photography is my full time passion, it’s only a part time career. Most days you can find me chasing around a five year old as his nanny.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE A PHOTOGRAPHER?

My love for photography started as a child with a hand me down camera and 10 rolls of film that were gifted to me. I quickly realized I loved capturing the moment especially when combined with being in nature and seeing breathtaking landscapes.

INTRODUCING OLYMPUS

How did you get started with the Olympus system?

I was first introduced to Olympus gear in 2018 when I started using the OMD EM1 Mark ii. I found that it’s light weight made it perfect for someone like me, who travels quite a bit. I also loved that the in camera image stabilization made it possible to leave my tripod at home more of the time. Now that I use the EM1X I love using the built in ND mode so I don’t have to fumble around with filters when the light is changing quickly and every second counts.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF THE OLYMPUS FAMILY?

Hands down it’s the people! Without fail every person I have interacted with in the Olympus community has been kind, supportive, and motivating! As a creative person I think it’s so important to surround yourself with other creatives to push you, turn to for advice and feed your energy! I’ve been lucky enough to do that with the Olympus family.

TIPS FOR OTHER BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

My advice to a new photographer would be to just get out there and shoot all the time. Don’t be afraid to to try new things, different types of photography, or to ask questions. I find most photographers are thrilled to pass on any knowledge they can or to “nerd out” and talk photography for awhile, so don’t be shy to send someone a message asking for help!
