MEET OLYMPUS VISIONARY JOHN STERLING RUTH
WHO ARE YOU?
I am from Nazareth, Pennsylvania. I specialize in lifestyle, automotive and product photography. Half of my time is spend on location shoots throughout the globe. The rest of the time is spend creating product photography.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE A PHOTOGRAPHER?
My passion for photography started in high school, I was fortunate that my school had an amazing photography program. This inspiration and instruction lead to a career in photography.
After graduating, I went on to art school in Philadelphia and started my own studio in 1988, Rock and Roll and Automotive being my primary focus. I now shoot still and motion campaigns for some of the largest companies in the world.
INTRODUCING OLYMPUS
How did you get started with the Olympus system?
I was introduced to Olympus camera systems when hired by the company to shoot ad campaigns.
What’s your go-to Olympus setup?
I primarily utilize the E-M1X in combination with many different lenses. For my lifestyle work, I love using Olympus’s bright prime lenses.
How does Olympus help you do your job?
The Sync IS offered on the M.Zuiko 12-100mm F4 IS PRO lens gains me a high hit ratio in the car to car portion of my business. Image stabilization becomes highly important when photographing a vehicle in motion while being suspending inches from the road surface.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF THE OLYMPUS FAMILY?
Being a part of the Olympus family gives me the opportunity to communicate and learn from some of the top shooters in the world. It also gives me the opportunity to share my experiences and knowledge with the photography community.

Photography is a journey. Slow down and enjoy the ride. You will be rewarded for your patience.
TIPS FOR OTHER PRO PHOTOGRAPHERS
Never get stagnant. Try a new genre. Pick up a focal length or lens you usually don’t use. Shoot in conditions you normally would turn down. Always, always reinvent yourself...This is a highly competitive occupation. Never burn a bridge.
