MEET OLYMPUS PHOTOGRAPHER THOMAS STIRR

WHO ARE YOU?

I'm a Canadian photographer and author. My professional work focuses mainly on industrial safety videos. I offer clients a range of services including onsite videography, storyboard editing and wordsmithing, video editing and assembly, and voice overs. We have also produced an extensive collection of posters for business including safety, wellness and anti-bullying. An author of eight books, including five eBooks that are photography related, my photography eBooks have been sold in over 35 countries. I have written over 750 photography articles that have appeared on my photography blog and on other well-known websites such as Photography Life and MirrorLessons.

WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE A PHOTOGRAPHER?

I’ve always been a very visually oriented individual. My first interchangeable lens camera was purchased in 1974 as part of my newspaper work requirement, but I never enjoyed working with film. It wasn’t until digital photography arrived that I really embraced photography as a powerful form of visual expression. My interests have primarily focused on macro photography, birds and nature, flowers, all things mechanical, and travel photography. I enjoy following my own creative path and have not referenced the work of other photographers.

INTRODUCING OLYMPUS

How did you get started with the Olympus system?

I’ve used full frame, APS-C and 1” sensor cameras in the past. After my existing system was discontinued, I researched options. Olympus emerged as a camera industry innovation leader.

What’s your go-to Olympus setup?

I participated in the Olympus Pro Loaner program, buying Olympus gear as a direct result. My Olympus kit includes two E-M1X bodies, three PRO F2.8 zooms (7-14mm, 12-40mm, 40-150mm), M.Zuiko 45mm F1.2, 60mm F2.8 Macro, MC-20 teleconverter, as well as STF-8 and FL-700WR flashes.

How does Olympus help you do your job?

Nothing compares to the size, weight and performance delivered by Olympus gear. It never gets in the way of getting the job done. The E-M1X is a technological marvel. Mindboggling IBIS performance. Game changing features like Handheld Hi Res, Pro Capture, in-camera focus stacking, and Live ND. Build quality, ergonomics, weatherproofing and performance are all at high professional standards.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF THE OLYMPUS FAMILY?

Being part of the Olympus family allows me to interact with innovative, independent thinkers who appreciate leading edge imaging technology in the same way that I do. Olympus equipment allows photographers to push the envelope of what is possible.

TIPS FOR OTHER BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS

Whether someone is a pro or just starting out, the most important thing a photographer can do is trust their instincts and intuition. The camera you have in your hands only really comes to life when you let your creative passions flow. Experiment. Make mistakes. Celebrate successes. Most importantly… always keep challenging yourself and expanding your craft.

TIPS FOR OTHER PRO PHOTOGRAPHERS

When it comes to camera gear ignore all of the hype about full frame cameras. Instead, concentrate on the image creating capabilities that a camera actually puts in your hands. Being able to capture a wider variety of images in new and innovative ways is far more important than some additional megapixels or a bit of dynamic range.
